11/11/2022 0 Comments Age of empires reddit![]() ![]() I have about 10 hours in the game so far and I can say it is quite decent, even if the bar for mainstream RTS games has sunk so low that anything not garbage is above standard. The game definitely needs a few updates from what I’ve read, but for an AoE game it appears to be a return to form. At first he didn’t like AoE4 because it’s not AoE2, but then he started to appreciate some of the different things the game does. I think Hera (Canadian AoE2 pro) gives a good view of this. He has a right to his opinion, but sometimes you have to understand what it is you’re looking at and what it’s trying to be. It would alienate AoE’s fanbase from the game. If you made the changes that he’s looking for, you would be remaking the wheel instead of innovating. I’m a little annoyed by the negative YT review from the fact that he seems to be giving it a negative review for the fact that he is viewing it as something it isn’t. I don’t know yet if it will live up to AoE2, but it looks fun. The game also clearly innovated with civs that are much more unique (you could see they were testing some of that in AoE2:DE) and areas they grew like walls and siege tower mechanics. It made sense for Relic to focus on AoE2 as it’s inspiration, so it does many things similar. AoE2 is probably the epitome of that (top 5 RTS in my opinion). Age of Empires as a series has a specific style. I think there is an important balance between innovation and remaking the wheel. It's too close, feels too claustrophobic. I like it overall, but my STEAM review is staying negative until they increase camera zoom range. Also there's a much greater variety of siege/artillery units as well.Įach faction feels a little bit different, with England and France feeling most like the traditional AoE 2 gameplay (especially England, longbows towers castles and farms), with factions like Rus and Mongols feeling a lot different now, more emphasis on hunting animals and stuff like that. It feels a lot like AoE 2 and is instantly recognizable as a successor to AoE 2 when you first play it with the classic unit counter loop or spears>cavalry>archers>spears, but there is now a slightly greater variety of unit-counter types, and infantry (men-at-arms line) has now been made somewhat useful (or at least not completely useless) by giving them higher HP, making them much more tanky against arrows and in some cases giving them a higher attack against armoured units, like knights. It seems like a mixture of 85% AoE 2, 15% AoE 3. ![]()
